Electoral registers are prepared each year and published each February. To be included in next years register (Feb 2002) you must register by the middle of December 2001. If you are not on the register, you will not be entitled to vote.

Overseas Voters

If you live overseas and have been on the electoral roll in Scotland within the last 20 years, then you may be eligible for a PROXY VOTE in the Scottish constituency where you were last registered. You are entitled to vote for up to 20 years after you have left Scotland. (eg if you left in 1978 you could still register up until 1998)

Contact The Electoral Registration Officer in the area you left, and ask for an Overseas Proxy Registration Form. You need to re-apply each year, and must nominate someone in Scotland to act as your proxy. You cannot vote by postal vote.

Proxy and Postal Voting in the UK

If you regularly work away from home or are on holiday and unlikely to be available to vote in person on an election day, you should register for a proxy or postal vote. This is usually done after the election has been announced, so you must act quickly, you may only have 2 weeks to get registered. Contact the above Electoral Registration Offices for more details.

Service Voters

If you are a member of the UK Armed Forces you should be registered as a Service Voter. Contact your unit Administration HQ for advice on appointing a proxy.
